Angela DeCarlo passed away on Sunday, November 4 after a near two-year battle with cancer. Loved ones from near and far gathered to be with Angela in her final days, emphasizing the awe-inspiring impact that Angela had on each one of her communities. Angela’s grace and kindness radiated beyond her immediate connections, and support for her and her family throughout her fight came from all over.
A New Jersey native from a military family, Angela lived in multiple places growing up. Maryland became her home after living in both New Jersey and Japan. Once she came to Maryland, she stayed; attending John Carroll High School in Bel Air and Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore. Throughout her life, Angela was a dedicated and intelligent student. Angela finished fourth in her high school class and became a member of the Honors Program at Loyola. She had a deep and genuine thirst for learning, writing, and travelling, which inspired her dedication to pursuing her Global Studies degree. Her empathy for others and her socially active mind inspired her to pursue this degree with the intention of helping to make the world a better place. Throughout her battle with cancer, Angela continued to pursue her degree with a full course load, calling her Evergreen Campus—and Baltimore—home.
Angela truly found her home and support system here in Baltimore. Baltimore was, she often said, the city that saved her. The Ulman Cancer Fund grew to become a part of this Baltimore community over the past few years. Throughout her fight with cancer, UCF acted as a support system for Angela, her family and her friends. Their services and events both provided for Angela and acknowledged how special she was. Angela’s roommate, Hannah, participated in the 4k for Cancer on Team Baltimore ’17 in honor of Angela. In the spring of 2018, Angela was honored by UCF as ‘Fighter of the Year’ at the annual Blue Jeans and Bowties Banquet. She was also excited to see that the Ulman House was being built, and looking forward to visiting it someday. It is this connection with the Ulman Cancer Fund, and Baltimore, that has inspired her family to ask that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Ulman House to honor Angela’s memory. The hope is to raise enough money to contribute to a study space or library in the Ulman House, for those guests pursuing a degree and for those who simply love to learn, read and write.
