Hi there! I'm Sandy, a senior at Indiana University studying business marketing. I'm from Franklin, Indiana, and I started running when I joined the middle school cross country team. What started as just a fun activity with friends soon became a passion of mine. After cross country and track in high school, I moved on to run recreationally. Recently, I've picked up marathon running with my sister, and it's my goal to run at least one marathon in each continent by age 30. Other hobbies include cycling, cooking and baking, taking Buzzfeed quizzes, nutrition, traveling and exploring new towns and cities, canvas art, and trying out new and diverse food.

I'm excited to run across America for an amazing of a cause as the Ulman Cancer Fund, which supports young adults with cancer. It's always been a goal of mine to see America, and running will provide a unique perspective that I otherwise would not get. This summer, I will be traveling with 29 other college students on a 49-day, 4500+ mile run from San Francisco, CA to New York, NY to raise funds and awareness for the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults. While I've been fortunate enough to have cancer-free relatives in my immediate family, I have watched friends and peers fight cancer throughout their lives. Their positive attitude and strength is inspiring, and have motivated me to give back to the cancer community. I have participated in Indiana University's Dance Marathon for 3 years, where I've indirectly helped the organization raise millions of dollars for Riley Children's Hospital and cancer research. This past year, I served as the team captain in one of my organizations and helped them feel more connected with the cancer community.

Why are you traveling over 4000 miles this summer with the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults?

As a undergraduate senior graduating in May 2017, I want to devote a couple of months to help a community that has impacted millions of people. In 2016 alone, it was projected that there would be approximately 1.6M new cases of invasive cancer, as well as ~600K Americans who will pass away in their fight against cancer. I believe the mission of 4K resonates deeply with my personal beliefs. I want to make a positive impact in the world, and this program devotes 49 days of my direct involvement, but countless days of giving back in the future. This program is truly amazing- it’s given hope to families and shows how someone who hasn’t even held his or her first full-time job can impact a large number of people. I hope to grow from this experience and inspire others to take a more proactive role within their communities.

ABOUT 2017 4K for Cancer

2017 marks the 16th year of the 4K for Cancer sending young adults on journeys across the country in an effort to inspire hope and unite communities in the fight against cancer. The 4K for Cancer is a program of The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults (UCF). Interested in joining the fight? Apply to be a rider or runner at www.4kforcancer.org

Challenge:

Over 70,000 young adults are diagnosed with cancer every year. Young adults (ages 15-39) face a variety of unique challenges with a cancer diagnosis including fertility preservation, social isolation, lack of insurance, delayed diagnosis, and more.

Solution:

The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults changes lives by creating a community of support for young adults, and their loved ones, impacted by cancer. With your support, the Ulman Cancer Fund is able to provide free support services and resources for the young adult cancer community including:

Cancer to 5K - a 12-week training program designed to introduce or reintroduce cancer survivors to physical activity.

Patient Navigation - a free program (onsite at cancer centers and remotely through our office) that ensures no young adult ever faces cancer alone. We provide one-on-one support & resources to young adults and their families to help them manage the cancer experience and long-term cancer survival.

Scholarships - a financial assistance program to help young adults continue their education after being affected by cancer through their own diagnosis or the diagnosis of a loved one.

UCF House - This year UCF broke ground on a “home away from home” to provide free housing for young adult cancer patients, and their caregivers, in East Baltimore.

Your donation will help make these programs and our mission possible!
